EWG’s Hall of Shame

Posted on 19. Jul, 2010 by Wendy in Health/Wellness

Summer is my favorite season, and one that is far too short in Michigan! I love everything about summer… hanging out with my kids/grandkids at the beach, sunny days, cookouts, fireworks, it stays light longer…ahhh…many more things I’m sure I’ve not covered.

If you’re like me you don’t want to spend your time outside worrying about whether you’re using a sunscreen that is actually safe and effective…or one that is filling your body with toxins!

FYI: 60% of what you apply to your skin is absorbed into your body.

That’s where EWG comes in. They recently released a 2010 Sunscreen Guide, where you can find their top-rated sunscreens, how major brands rank and tips to stay safe in the sun.

Hall of Shame

When it comes to protecting yourself from the sun, it’s easy to go    wrong.

Many products carry confusing claims or contain ingredients that could pose health risks. Many people fail to cover up in the mistaken belief that sunscreen alone will protect them from skin cancer risks. There’s a questionable “seal of approval” program. Last but not least, a major federal agency has failed for 32 years to finish the job of issuing enforceable standards to protect consumers.

EWG found some prime examples of products and players that typify what’s wrong with the sun protection business.

Quick tips for a good sunscreen.
