Is there a recipe for creating a great New Year? I think there is!
I love the start of a New Year. For me it represents a clean slate, a fresh start and I’m always filled with anticipation and hope for a year that is better than the last one even if it was a good year.
Statistics show that by January 15th ninety five percent of people have ditched the resolutions that they made on January 1st. Like so many others, over the past years, I’ve taken the time to think about and to write out my goals and resolutions, but sadly more times than I’d like to admit, I’ve lost sight of the vision and given up.
Not this year! This year things are going to be different. I have compelling reasons for making sure that I accomplish my goals…no resolutions for me, only specific goals.
I’m turning 61 in a few weeks, so hard to believe…the years have flown by. There was a time when that number would have bothered me and made me feel old, but now it just serves as a reminder that time is short and I can’t afford to waste anymore of it on things that don’t matter in the big scheme of life.
What does it really take to create lasting change, to make it happen?
Progress. Progress is the secret to happiness
Control the Process
Define your goal/vision. You must have a vision of what you truly want. What are you here to create? Does it excite you? Does it have PULL?
Push (will power) Pull (something that you desire so much that it excites you)
Follow thru comes down to emotional intensity and compelling reasons. Do you have strong enough reasons to pull you through the challenges that will inevitably come?
Reasons come first and Answers come second
When you get really clear on what you want and review it daily, your brain will become incredibly acute at getting you to notice things that will help you move forward.
To Change Your Life…Raise Your Standards
Everybody gets their MUSTS – when you decide something is a MUST you find a way to make it happen.
Think of a time when you said NO MORE! A shift happened, something clicked and it becomes a must, it doesn’t take will power anymore it becomes automatic. It becomes part of your identity. That happened to me almost 40 years ago when I quit smoking. 🙂
Should’s are like Resolutions…easily broken
Human beings absolutely follow thru on who they believe they are. We all act consistently with who we believe we are.
Look at any limitations in your life and ask yourself when you decided to accept that limitation.
Whatever people have their identity attached to they live. We live who we believe we are. That’s just how it works.
Example: Look at your physical body…it’s a reflection of ONE thing…not your goals, not your desires, but your STANDARDS. The identity you have of yourself. This one hit home…I haven’t done a very good job of eating right and exercising so this is one of my MUSTs moving forward.
Once you lock in on an identity you WILL find a way to get there!
Wants don’t get met consistently, Standards do!
Rituals are where the power is. Rituals are actions that you do consistently. Little things you do each day that help you gain momentum. Rituals define us.
ALL of the results in your life come from your rituals. Successful people start with a Standard and have Rituals that follow it up.
Expand your vision of yourself and identify yourself in a new way
It all comes down to the inner game. Changing your life is a change of the inner game. When you start to change your identity things shift.
Success and failure aren’t giant events…they come from all the little things we do or don’t do.
Success is….
having a vision and making it compelling
seeing and feeling it everyday
feeling the sense that you’re here to learn, grow and give something back to the world, not just myself. It’s caring for other people. It’s ALL the little stuff that adds up.
The only thing that’s going to make you happy this year or any other year, is to step up. Raise your Standards and see what you’re capable of. Don’t let this New Year be like last year even if it was a good one!
Assignment:
What’s an area of your life that you want to improve? An area that’s important to you?
Write down where you are at and how it is currently – be very specific
Write down what are the rituals that have put me there?
Write down what you want. What do you really want? Be specific
What are the rituals that will get you there? What would you need to do differently each day to get what you want?
Will Power doesn’t last Rituals last!
Jim Rohn once said…
There are two pains in life…the pain of discipline or the pain of regret. Discipline weighs ounces and regrets weigh tons.
This commentary was taken from Tony Robbins video https://youtu.be/T2JRTCauFK0 I highly recommend listening to it and considering his recipe for creating lasting change.
Cheers to a creating a fabulous New Year!
