We all have a story. The question is are we willing to share our story and in doing so share a piece of our heart.
If you’ve lived for a considerable length of time, as I have, taking a trip down memory lane is likely to stir up a variety of emotions; joy, contentment, pleasure, satisfaction, happiness, inspiration, anger, sorrow, loss, resentment and regret, just to name a few.
Write Your Story…
It’s ironic that today my day started with a post from National Day Calendar in my inbox, stating that among other things March 14 is National Write Your Story Day.
Ironic, because this past Saturday I made a commitment to write for at least 15 minutes everyday. I started out by writing a snippet of my story. It’s a snippet from one of the darkest times of my life.
I was surprised by how extremely hard it is to write…to feel the emotions all over again and try to put it into words.
An unpleasant trip down memory lane
You may ask “why are you taking an unpleasant trip down memory lane?”
Good question!
I resurrected my blog from the dead this year on January 1st, 2019. When I first started the blog back in 2010 it was my attempt to share what I was learning about health, wellness, aging, mindfulness and spirituality. Hence, the title…Feeding Mind, Body & Spirit
A lot has happened on this journey called life since 2010. I’ve learned a lot, been thru a lot of ups and downs, twists and turns.
Overcoming Fear
Previous to launching my blog in January, I had spent countless hours and months trying to build a new blog using an assumed name!
My reasoning…if I used an assumed name, I could talk freely about overcoming depression, a pile of debt, despair, self-loathing, self-condemnation and guilt, without having my friends, family or business associates stumbling upon it.
Sadly, I’m not very tech savvy so it was very time consuming. The more I worked on it…evenings after work and on weekends…the more I realized that I needed to stop being such a COWARD, give my existing blog a face-lift and keep it under my real name.
I’m still working on the coward part. Maybe that’s why it’s taking me SO long to write my story.
Being a coward is only part of it, writing is hard work!
Writing Is An Art…it takes practice to get good at it
I’m currently reading a book called Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott, some instructions on writing and life. Listening to the book and attempting to write my story have given me a new appreciation for writers. It’s such an amazing gift, to be able to put words on paper and bring them alive for the reader. To paint a picture with words so vivid that the reader can picture it, feel it, to have the words stir so many emotions during the course of the story that the reader may get angry, cry or laugh out loud.
Any aspirations that I ever had of being able to write have definitely come into question after trying to write just a little snippet of my story! That and the fact that English was never a subject that I was any good at. That said, save your comments on grammar and punctuation.
It’s taken me four days to write two full pages! I’d starve if I was being paid to write!
All that to say, I’m determined to finish my story and have the courage to share it when I do.
My purpose for creating Empowering Mind, Body and Spirit was to share the journey…to share hope, encouragement and inspiration.
Go ahead…Write your story!
I’d love to hear from you so please stop by my Facebook page or Instagram page and share your stories.
National Write Your Story Day challenges you to tell your story in written form.
You may think to yourself, “There’s nothing in my life that’s interesting enough to write about.”
Look back at old photographs and you will be surprised at all of the inspiration that you may find. Your stories can be treasures to family and loved ones.
National Write Your Story Day encourages us to start telling our personal story today. There’s a story worth recounting in there somewhere!
